Xiu Liu (Grace) was born and raised in China. When she first arrived in Australia, she struggled with social isolation and job opportunities. A lack of English language was a big obstacle for her to access resources and find employment. Through free English classes in the community, she built her confidence and made new friends. She found her place in the Australian community by using her hairdresser skills to give back to disabled elderly with at-home visits cutting their hair. It was through this job that she heard about SisterWorks.
Grace joined our sewing team in 2020 to produce face masks and immediately felt right at home amongst other women. Being a mum to 2 kids, Grace struggled to find employment. SisterWorks provides the perfect opportunity for her to work flexibly and earn an income while looking after her kids. Grace is now an integral leader of our Social Enterprise production hub, participating in our sewing projects and teaching other Sisters as she spreads information about the good work of SisterWorks.
