“I talk with the ladies. Out of my two and a half years of being here in Australia, being at SisterWorks has been the best part.”

Hello, my name is Milia and I am from Brazil. I came here with my husband two and a half years ago for him to do research in chemical engineering at Monash University. When we lived in Brazil I was a nurse for 10 years, but here I work as a doula. I was used to working with mums so it was easy to step into. In this job you are there totally for the mum, you give them all the physical and emotional support.

When I used to teach childbirth classes, I wanted to make something that changed the view of childbirth and breastfeeding, to make it more normal so people know it’s not a crazy thing. I also wanted to make something for the kids to learn. So I sewed a doll with the placenta and the uterus, with a big belly and a place for the mother to breastfeed the baby. This is how I started sewing and making dolls at SisterWorks.

At SisterWorks I now teach other sisters to make dolls. At the moment I am happy teaching and working with them. I like to help others to improve their sewing skills. But you know, I also like to talk with the ladies. Out of my two and a half years of being here in Australia, being at SisterWorks has been the best part.

At the beginning it was too lonely, it is so hard to be lonely. Back in Brazil I was working full time, doing something I love. And then I came here and had lots of free time and realised that I didn’t want it. It’s a lot of time and you don’t know what to do with it. You feel like shit.

Being at SisterWorks has allowed me to make some very good friends and also improve my English. Sometimes the Australian accent is really strong and it’s hard to understand, but now most of the time I understand. I used to not be able to watch an English movie without subtitles, but now I can.

Of course I would love to go back to Brazil and continue with nursing, but if I can continue doing my work here at SisterWorks, I am happy to stay for now.
