Meet one of our first Sisters, Elizabeth. 🥰
Elizabeth is from Odessa, Ukraine. Thirty years ago Elizabeth moved to Melbourne with her husband and her three children 🧒🏻👦🏼👧🏻 from what used to be the USSR. Her husband is Jewish and the Jewish Welfare Organisation helped them to move to Australia. 🇦🇺

In Odessa, she was an Economist …”When I came here I started working at a sewing factory. 👷🏻‍♀‍ Back then, the government paid the factory owner to teach us the skills we needed for work so they put me behind a sewing machine, and that was it. I learnt how to sew and worked there until I went on the pension. I worked very hard, I made a future for my children and grandchildren but once they grew up I had nothing to do. I could sew and that’s it. My neighbour, an Australian woman, also knew how to sew so we started sewing dolls together. 🧵 We heard that there was a woman at the community services centre who was looking for other women who knew how to sew and that’s how I met Luz from Sisterworks. 🥰 We became friends and that’s how it all started”. 👭

At Sisterworks, Elizabeth makes dolls and toys; 🐨 🧶 Graduation Bears, Humpty Dumpty, Scottish men, Scarecrows and many more. Elizabeth also helps support our Pop Up Markets. 💪 She is great with customers and understands thier needs.

The money from these dolls has given her the opportunity to travel 🧳 the world over and over again. 🌎 Including twice to America.

You ask me if I like it here (Australia): “Most Australians don’t understand how lucky they are to live in such a beautiful country. They just don’t understand”.

Meet Lane Carrandi! She is one of our incredible volunteers 😊.
"Born and raised in New York City, I love diverse culture, creative thinking, and unique experiences 🌄. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a Bachelors of Science in Public Health: Health Promotion and Behavior and Global Health Certificate, I moved to Melbourne and found my Sisters 👩🏾‍🤝‍👩🏼. SisterWorks has become my community, where I have built relationships that has crossed language and cultural barriers 🤝🏼. Now, I am pursuing a Masters of Public Health, and intend to continue to impact areas of Women’s Health and Minority Health 🏥."

What is your role at SisterWorks?
"I am a Nutrition Educator for the Cooking Program 🍎. I teach Sisters about nutrition literacy and healthy decision-making 💡. By encouraging variety, it is my goal to empower Sisters to feel confident to choose the food that is best for them 💪🏼."

"I am a yoga teacher, and love going outside for walks 🌳."

Join SisterWorks FREE online classes! The classes are available for migrant, refugee and asylum seeker women. They change every week so stay posted via our social media! 🤗 If you are interested please email engagement@sisterworks.org.au.

The classes provide practical learning such as mask sewing, slippers making and other craft activities which will be helpful to improve useful skills throughout social distancing ❤️ We also have English classes📚 🤓 some days a week, depending on teachers availability!
