At SisterWorks, we are so proud of the commitment, strength, and resilience demonstrated by our Sisters to rebuild their lives upon arriving in Australia, often with limited English language skills, financial resources, and emotional support. Their enthusiastic participation in the programs, classes and workshops at SisterWorks prove that they are determined to create an economically empowered life for themselves and their families, surrounded by people who support their ambitious dreams through professional mentoring and counselling.
It is therefore truly uplifting when our Sisters are recognised for their accomplishments by others, as was the case with our Sister Claudia Freitas, who was interviewed by the BHP Foundation for their community news series. The interview focused on Claudia’s journey to Australia from Brazil in 2015, and details her many incredible achievements including improving her English skills and developing new entrepreneurial skills such as receiving her food handling certificate, learning to sew, and participating in SisterWorks’ sales training and public speaking program. She has since gone on to become an inspirational speaker and mentor to other Sisters.
Claudia has been an empowering example of what migrant women can achieve when given the right support, and we are grateful to the team at BHP Foundation for giving Claudia the opportunity to share her experience, in the hope that it will inspire other migrant, asylum seeker and refugee women to achieve their potential.
