Prestigious Recognition for SisterWorks

SisterWorks is excited to have both our Programs and Social Enterprise recognised for our work with migrant, refugee and asylum seeking women.  We recently won a Victorian Multicultural Award for Excellence in Education and are shortlisted for the prestigious City of Melbourne award for one of our sustainability initiatives.  Read more about both below.

Victorian Multicultural Award for Excellence

SisterWorks was one of 61 outstanding Victorian individuals, businesses and organisations who were recognised last week at the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) Awards for Excellence. The awardees were recognised for their outstanding and diverse contributions to multicultural Victoria in categories such as Arts, Business, Health, Local Government and Youth Leadership.

SisterWorks won the Education Award for Vocational Education and Training for our Hospitality training program, which has trained more than 350 sisters since its start in July 2021.

Our CEO Ifrin Fittock and Head of Programs Mamiko Nakada accepted the award on behalf of SisterWorks at an awards ceremony last week at Government House in Victoria. The Governor, the Hon. Linda Dessau AC Governor of Victoria presented awards alongside VMC Chairperson Vivienne Nguyen AM, Minister for Multicultural Affairs the Hon. Ros Spence, Minister for Education, the Hon. Natalie Hutchins and other dignitaries.

City of Melbourne Awards Finalist

SisterWorks was the runner up for the City of Melbourne (COM) Awards in its Sustainability category for our Project ‘From Banners to Bags’. The recognition is for our partnership with the City to turn its large event banners into extremely durable tote bags to provide paid employment opportunities for the migrant and refugee sisters SisterWorks trains and supports.

As part of this recognition, our Social Enterprise team responsible for the Banners to Bags project took part in a special video shoot and a workshop on doughnut economists (a visual framework for sustainable development, eg circular process) organised by the City for all finalists. SisterWorks board members, senior team and a Sister who worked on this project attended the Melbourne Awards Gala in November during its 20th year of recognising inspirational Melburnians making extraordinary contributions to the community.
