Theory of Change

SisterWorks Theory of Change

Our Theory of Change shows how that belief becomes real impact for women from refugee, migrant and asylum seeker backgrounds. It outlines the steps we take, the values guiding us, and the long-term change created when women access the right support, skills and opportunities.

This model helps us stay focused on what matters. It shapes our programs, our partnerships and our social enterprise activities. It also shows how empowerment extends far beyond one woman. When a Sister builds confidence, skills and economic independence, her family, community and the wider economy benefit too.

Our Vision

Women from refugee, migrant and asylum seeker backgrounds are economically empowered, independent and thriving in inclusive, socially connected communities.

Our Beliefs

Economic empowerment gives women agency and dignity. When women thrive, families and communities thrive. Refugee and migrant women often face the greatest barriers to employment, education and belonging, so our work focuses on ensuring they have equal access to the opportunities needed for a strong, independent future.

How We Create Change

Our approach combines industry training, employment support, entrepreneurship pathways and hands-on learning through our social enterprises. Sisters gain practical skills, build their confidence and connect with mentors, employers and wider professional networks. Our team and volunteers bring deep expertise and lived experience, strengthening our ability to walk alongside women as they build new futures in Australia.

Partnerships play a central role. By working with employers, government, community groups and sustainability networks, we create accessible pathways into meaningful work. Our social enterprises offer real job experience, practical skills development and a sustainable model that reinvests revenue back into supporting women.

What Women Gain

Women develop industry-specific knowledge, build job readiness and gain the confidence to step into work or grow their own small business. Many move into paid employment, further study or entrepreneurship. They expand their social and professional networks, improve their settlement journey and experience a stronger sense of belonging.

Long-Term Impact

Over time, Sisters experience greater independence, resilience and financial security. Families become more stable, with improved wellbeing and future opportunities. Workplaces benefit from more inclusive and equitable hiring practices. Communities become stronger and more connected as diversity is valued and celebrated.

Our sustainability initiatives support businesses to adopt circular economy practices and reduce waste, creating environmental impact alongside social and economic outcomes. Social procurement also expands as more organisations choose responsible purchasing that directly supports women’s empowerment.

Our Commitment

Everything we do is grounded in the belief that with the right support, every woman can shape her future and thrive. Through training, employment pathways, entrepreneurship and social enterprise, we create opportunities that break down barriers and build long-term economic independence.

Work Empowers Women. It strengthens families. It builds communities. It changes lives.
