Finding your first job in a new country can be overwhelming, especially without local experience or support. For Corrina, one call to SisterWorks became the turning point. In her own words, Corrina shares how that moment became the turning point in her journey, from feeling lost and discouraged to finding confidence, securing her first job, and growing into a leadership role at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC). Her story is a testament to what’s possible when women are empowered to believe in themselves.
"My name is Corrina and I am originally from India. I came to Australia in the year 2021 seeking a better life — a place where I could grow, work, and build a meaningful future for myself. But starting over in a new country wasn’t easy.
When I first arrived, I applied for many jobs but didn’t receive any responses. I didn’t have a local diploma or certificate, and I couldn’t afford the high cost of formal education here. It was a frustrating and lonely time — I wanted to work and contribute, but I just didn’t know where to begin.
Thanks to SisterWorks, I started working at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) as a casual kitchen aide on July 3, 2023. From day one, I was welcomed by a friendly and supportive team. The environment was positive, and I felt encouraged to grow.
Over time, I worked hard, learned quickly, and took on new responsibilities and became the ‘employee of the month’ in August 2023. Since 7th July 2025, I’ve been promoted to a full-time Team Leader at MCEC. SisterWorks’ Employment Support department has been supporting me since I joined the program, ensuring that I’m ok and I could reach out whenever I needed. I truly appreciate this.
This journey hasn’t just been about getting a job, it’s been about rebuilding my identity, finding purpose, and feeling empowered.
To all the sisters out there who might be struggling or doubting themselves: I want you to know that you can do it too. Don’t give up. Reach out, take that first step, and believe in yourself. SisterWorks was my turning point and it can be yours too."
