Oluwatosin, a single mother from Nigeria, embarked on a courageous journey to Australia in 2023 as an asylum-seeker. Fleeing from domestic violence and seeking safety for herself and her 9-year-old son, she arrived in a new country with no network and no support system.

Adjusting to life in Australia was overwhelming, but Tosin was determined to create a better future.

In 2024, Tosin found SisterWorks through a friend who had been in a similar situation. Despite the long commute from Ballarat to our Dandenong Empowerment Hub, Tosin completed SisterWorks’ hospitality program, where she developed essential skills and received the support needed to secure her first job in the Australian workforce.

Tosin was placed with Delaware North, working at some of Melbourne’s most iconic venues – the MCG and Marvel Stadium. Tosin’s passion for hospitality shines through as she thrives in her new role. She credits SisterWorks for teaching her how to “fish” for herself rather than simply giving her a fish, instilling a sense of independence and empowerment that has transformed her life.

Beyond her job, Tosin’s success is also reflected in her personal achievements. She recently bought her first car, a milestone that has brought a sense of freedom and self-sufficiency. Even though she still lives in Ballarat, Tosin doesn’t mind the commute to her shifts, as she is now financially stable and confident in her ability to manage her life in Australia.

Tosin’s journey doesn’t stop with hospitality. She has long-term aspirations to become a nurse and recently completed a diploma in community services.

Today, Tosin continues to excel at Delaware North, where she is appreciated for her hard work and positive attitude. Her journey, from escaping a violent past to thriving in her new life, is a testament to her strength and determination. Through SisterWorks, Tosin not only found a job but also gained the confidence and resources to rebuild her life and achieve her goals.
