Lizbeth Pretell Romero’s journey from Peru to Australia is a powerful story of resilience, professional growth, and the importance of community support.
Arriving in Australia on March 20, 2023, on a Covid Visa 408, Lizbeth and her husband faced immediate challenges as they adjusted to life in a new country. With her background in hospitality management and experience as a tourist officer in Peru, Lizbeth’s goal was to further her professional development and gain more experience in both the public and private sectors of the tourism industry.
However, the transition wasn’t easy. When they arrived in Australia, her husband struggled to find a job for five months, which put additional pressure on Lizbeth. Despite this, she remained determined to improve her own career prospects and support her husband emotionally through this difficult time.
Lizbeth had already worked at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) when a friend recommended she join SisterWorks. This suggestion would turn out to be a turning point in her journey. SisterWorks offered Lizbeth a chance to not only improve her skills but also gain the confidence she needed to succeed in her new country.
In early 2024, Lizbeth joined the Customer Service program at SisterWorks, which was her first experience studying in Australia. This was a big step for her, as she had previously studied in Peru but hadn’t experienced the Australian education system. SisterWorks provided her with the tools and knowledge to navigate the local job market, and she quickly gained confidence in her abilities.
As Lizbeth became more familiar with the local work culture and enhanced her skills, she secured a front-of-house position with Delaware North, a key partner of SisterWorks. This role marked a significant milestone in her professional journey, providing her with valuable practical experience and an opportunity to expand her network within the industry.
She is considering pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work to help others in a professional capacity. Her passion for helping people and making a positive impact on their lives is a driving force behind this decision. Lizbeth’s journey has taught her that there are no limits to what she can achieve with determination and the right support.
In reflecting on her journey, Lizbeth offers this advice: "Believe in yourself because everything is possible if you wish to. Don’t rely on just one opportunity—explore many and keep pushing for what you want. And above all, don’t panic—be patient. Everything will work out in the end."
Lizbeth’s time at SisterWorks has been transformative. She has gained valuable skills, grown in confidence, and found a supportive community that has been there every step of the way. Her experience is a reminder that with perseverance, the right opportunities, and a willingness to learn, anyone can overcome challenges and thrive, no matter where they come from.
Lizbeth’s journey is far from over. With her eyes set on further education and her continued involvement with SisterWorks, she is proving that there is no limit to what she can achieve. And for other women facing similar struggles, Lizbeth’s story offers hope and inspiration to take that first step and believe in the possibilities that lie ahead.
